The Story:
This Highland Street view was taken looking West from the Maple Avenue intersection shortly before paving in 1945. At Left is Nicol's tea room, later George Chu's restaurant, with the Molou Theatre (1941) beside it. Norm Roberts' store is at Right with Ron Curry's Shell garage beside it. The Grand Central Hotel dominates the streetscape at centre. The main business section of the village, the large back yards of the buildings at Left, also contained light manufacturing shops and services. Boatwerks (sic) presently occupies the corner at Left, while the opposite corner is home to the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, erected in 1972.
