The Merchants of Haliburton : Downtown Memories.......
Object Number:

The Story:
From humble beginnings, W.R. Curry's livery business evolved into the General Motors dealership "W.R. Curry & Son" on the South side of Highland Street by 1923. In 1948-49, son Ron had this new modern garage/dealership erected on the site of the former James Dover store, at the South East corner of Highland Street and Maple Avenue. Opened in 1949, these premises served the motoring public until 2006 when Curry Motors moved to a new facility on County Road # 21. Their vacated premises were immediately demolished to make way for the new Rexall Pharmacy, as history repeated itself on this corner.* Note the appliances in the front windows - Currys sold the General Motors brand Frigidaire line into the 1950s.

*The James Dover store site was home to Ross Nicol's Rexall Pharmacy back in the 1940s, so it is funny that Curry Motors was torn down to replicate something that had previously existed at that location.
