The Story:
English-born James Dover arrived in Haliburton in 1867. By the early 1870s he was occupying this general store at the South East corner of Highland Street and Maple Avenue. He operated the business and also served as Haliburton's postmaster from the premises from 1888 until his death in 1915. He was succeeded by his daughter Catherine, then by Dorothy Clarke. In later years the store was home to Ross Nicol's pharmacy, and also contained a doctor's office in the back (Dr. Charles Frain, Dr. Louis Carroll). In 1937 the Haliburton Post Office moved out when an official edifice was erected down the street. The drug store carried on within until around 1948 when the shop and its adjoining house in back (not visible in photo) were torn down to make way for Curry Motors, who opened their new premises in 1949.
