The Merchants of Haliburton : Downtown Memories.......
Object Number:

The Story:
The William "Billy" Baker (1885-1961) blacksmith shop in Haliburton was the village's main ironworking facility in its day. Billy's son Lloyd "Buck" Baker (1922-2004) worked with his father, and specialised in shoeing horses. Buck is posed at Right, clutching a sledge hammer and gripping a horseshoe in his tongs. His friend Max McCracken stands at Left with a canthook.
Billy Baker provided his blacksmithing services for cash, but would accept farm produce in payment, as well as scrap iron for use in the business. Billy Baker was also an agent for farm machinery, as the signs on the shop attest.

Note Buck Baker's 1927 Chev in the background of this early 1940s photo. The Full Gospel Lighthouse now occupies this site.
