The Story:
Remittance men were outcasts from English society, sent abroad by their families to live, and maintained on an allowance. Several settled in Dysart Township in the 19th century.

Theophilus Bellairs was a remittance man who arrived in 1873. Something of a local character, he was known for his quirks and eccentricities. Here, he is shown with his wife Mary Turnbull (nee Heard), who he married in 1891. They resided on the outskirts of Haliburton Village at Bellair's Hill.
