The Story:
William Laking (1845-1931) came to Haliburton just after 1900 and set up a saw mill on the Mill Reserve lot in the village. The Laking Lumber Company provided employment for men in the bush, the mill, and the yard. Community minded, Laking served as Dysart reeve during 1919-12. Capable management/staffing later allowed him to conduct his Haliburton business in absentia until closing down/winding up his local operations in the late 1920s.

Son John (Jack) Laking managed his father's Haliburton affairs briefly, and served as Dysart reeve during 1914-1915, but disappeared on Drag Lake in 1917.
