The Story:
Most lumbering photographs are unidentified as to names and locations, making it difficult to pay proper tribute to the hard working forebears within. This late 19th century photo is typical, and shows a rough and ready camp quarters of the day and a gang of stalwart lumbermen posed. Note the size of the logs used in the construction of the shanty. Drafts whistling through the walls were easily defeated with a liberal stuffing of hay. Heavy woolen clothing in stripes and checks suited them well. The cooks of course wore white. A note on the back of the photograph indicates it was sent to a Mr. Gilmour, Post Office, Haliburton.
